I remembered Chief Mountain from the 2001 trip through this area and looked forward to seeing it again. In my memory, it was dramatic. The formation was “socked in” with clouds when we first saw where it was. We waited a good while at the first opportunity to stop. Behind the mountain from us, the sky seemed relatively clear. The wind seemed to be blowing the clouds away. In a while, I realized that the wind parting around the mountain was probably causing the clouds on our side. We moved on. After a few miles, we found a viewing area that gave me this image.
