Ruth sets at the edge of huge piles of refuge from an open pit mining operation that may continue to yield copper. There may also be some gold and silver. The things I read were not clear. One reference said the mining was stopped in the late 1990's. Yet, I saw workers and huge trucks active on the sledge piles. Somewhere, I read that Ruth's population is now about 300 people. Obviously it was once much lager, as evidenced by the abandon, relatively modern school building.
