Father's Day Weekend 2012 - Late in the afternoon we got our orange rental Jeep and headed for Currituck National Wildlife Reserve. Finally, we would have a chance to really see these animals. Driving on the beach was an adventure that evening. The Jeep was ours for 24 yours. So, we didn't waste any time. High wind and threatening rain sent us back to the paved road when we were getting close to the Virginia State Line. The blowing sand was dramatic.
The 2012 trip started early on Saturday June 23, returning on Wednesday June 27. We drove to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, where a Holiday Inn Express was our base of operation. From there, we traveled south to Ocracoke Island and north to the Virginia State Line. The last several miles of the northern trip were on the beach in a Jeep we rented from a dealership at Kill Devil Hill. There would be no way to make that part of the trip without 4-wheel drive. We made that part of the trip to photograph wild horses in the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge.
