One of the interesting things in the Kananaskis River Park was a classic pump design. Mark had not seen one. I could remember them at both my Lewis and Parkey grandparents’ homes. I talked about remembering the flavor of water from those wells, particularly Grandmother Lewis’ well. I also told Mark of a cowboy song from my youth, about leaving a jar of water for the next person to “prime the pump.” (http://www.songlyrics.com/the-kingston-trio/desert-pete-lyrics/
) The ballad illustrated the ethics in helping an unknown next person at the well and the courage it would take to pour the water into the pump instead of drinking it. The well could be dry, in which case priming the pump would waste the little water there was there. But, if it worked, there would be enough water to fill everything the cowboy had for carrying it.
